Helio gracie rolling11/21/2023 ![]() Tl dr: people like Royce and Rener are full of sh*t. The truth is that the old school guard have nothing but to assert unfounded claims that people who learn new school techniques can't defend themselves on the street to make themselves feel better in competition. berimbolo, 50/50),e able to transfer his bjj to a self-defense situation quite easily: Here's Ryan Hall, a bjj champion who uses a bunch of new school moves (i.e. They already have a great base in the foundation of BJJ but they improved and refused to remain static. You can't tell me someone like Rafa Mendes would not be able to choke someone out unconscious if he got into a physical altercation because he didn't take the Gracie University course. Complete utter bs.įurthermore, what irks me to no end are these stubborn dinosaurs assert that new school bjj practitioners can't use the techniques they learned and apply it in a street fight context. The Gracies are starting to sound like the kung fu masters explaining why they can't fight in the UFC because their techniques are made for the street and if they did it in the UFC people would die. Do they? Often not.Ĭase in point, look at Matt Hughes and how he just steam rolled through Royce. ![]() These old school guys who assert their techniques are enough ought to be going out and integrating striking as a major part of their game. But the world evolved and he chose not to and now he's become irrelevant. He's still a legend in the MMA arena in the early days because of his unique style in the context of the times. ![]() But in all honesty Royce was always a mediocre mma fighter. Now I hear people like Royce talk about this bs about how his jiujitsu is made for the streets. They refuse to learn new techniques and counter and in any other context we would call that ignorance. What made them champions in the UFC for their innovative fighting style no longer is unique because they're unwilling to adapt. The painful truth is that they're outmoded. This is incredibly insulting to the competitors who have trained hard to win these competitions and borderline delusional. Disclaimer, this doesn't apply to all the Gracies but to a select few.Īs this recent Metamoris fiasco has shown, all the time I see certain Gracie family members get on their high pedestal and arrogantly dismiss their competition losses because their "pure" jiu-jitsu is made for the streets.
